Peter Burke Abele Obituary, ALBANY, Ohio — Peter Burke Abele, 69, of Albany, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026, with his wife, Kellie, by his side. A respected jurist, attorney, coach, and community member, Abele was remembered for his decades of public service, dedication to the law, and commitment to helping others.
A graduate of the Vinton County High School Class of 1975, Abele continued his education by earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green State University and a Juris Doctor degree from Capital University Law School. His legal career included serving as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Vinton County, Ohio, Prosecutor for the City of Athens, Ohio, and as a Referee in the Athens County Common Pleas Court.
In 1991, Abele was elected to the Ohio Fourth District Court of Appeals, where he served as a judge for 36 years. Throughout his judicial career, he also had the opportunity to swear in several graduating Ohio State Trooper classes and served by appointment on the Ohio Supreme Court.
Those who knew Abele described him as a person of intelligence, generosity, humility, and kindness. He was recognized for his dedication to fairness and wisdom in his legal decisions, as well as for living by principles of integrity, honesty, authenticity, curiosity, perspective, and compassion.
Beyond his legal career, Abele was deeply involved in youth baseball. After his own playing years, he spent more than 30 years coaching local teams ranging from Coach Pitch through American Legion levels. He continued studying the game and helping young athletes develop their skills, with the goal of encouraging them to reach their potential.
Abele’s family shared that his presence will be deeply missed. They said they will go on honoring his memory by carrying forward the values and character he demonstrated throughout his life.
He was preceded in loss by his parents, Homer E. “Pete” Abele and Addie Abele, and his sister, Terry Smith. He is survived by his wife, Kellie; his sons, Alex, Chase, and Ash; and his brother, Andy.
At Abele’s request, he will be cremated, and no services will be held. Arrangements have been entrusted to Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville.
