SCRANTON, Pennsylvania — Dunmore Police Sergeant Stephon Burgette surrendered to law enforcement Friday at Central Court in Scranton to face drug-related charges stemming from an investigation into an alleged situation that occurred while he was on duty.
Per to court documents, Burgette is accused of ingesting cocaine and later collapsing at his desk inside the Dunmore Police Department headquarters in November. Investigators allege that the cocaine involved had been taken from evidence maintained by the department.
The allegations have drawn attention because of Burgette’s position as a police sergeant and the circumstances surrounding the alleged use of narcotics while he was on duty. Authorities have focused their inquiry on what occurred inside the department and how the alleged drugs were obtained.
Court paperwork reportedly alleges that the cocaine came from evidence under police control. The circumstances surrounding the handling and removal of the evidence remain part of the probe described in the court documents.
Burgette turned himself in Friday and is now facing charges related to the case. Further court proceedings are expected as prosecutors and defense attorneys address the allegations and present their respective positions before the court.
The case has also raised questions about evidence-handling procedures and internal oversight within law enforcement agencies. Still, officials have not publicly released additional information about whether broader departmental reviews have been initiated.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may emerge as the legal proceedings continue. Burgette is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
Authorities have not released further details beyond the allegations contained in the court records. The case will go on through the legal process, where the allegations against Burgette will be subject to judicial review.
